Camping Oberstdorf is a conveniently located campsite about 10 minutes walk from the attractive pedestrianised town centre which has a large range of shops, cafes and restaurants. It has a recently refurbished central facilities building with free showers, toilets and a small laundrette which are clean and very well maintained. There is a pub/restaurant on site which offers good budget friendly food and drink. There is also a free ski bus service from the site to the town centre ski lifts and connection to the service bus which will take you to the two out of town ski areas.
How to get to Campingplatz Oberstdorf
Oberstdorf is a straightforward drive from Calais being only 25 miles from Junction 136 on the A7 at Sulzberg in the Allgau. The most direct route is via Belgium, Luxembourg and the Germany autobahn network at 579 miles, although for caravanners, missing out Luxembourg and heading for Koln & Wurzburg and the A7 at 635 miles will prove to be a less hilly and easier tow. The campsite is level access from the main road, but can be icy on erratically maintained internal roads.

Zwei-Lander Ski Area – What is the skiing like in Oberstdorf ?
Oberstdorf ski resort lies on the border of Germany and Austria. It has 130 kms of piste spread over three ski areas. The first is accessed from a gondola in the town centre which takes you to the Nebelhorn at 2220m. The second is 8 kms out of town at the end of the Kleinwalsertal valley and the Fellhorn at 2037m. This area is actually in Voralberg, Austria and features 3 other ski areas; Mittleberg, Hirshegg & Baad. Lastly the Schonblick ski area at 1450m can be accessed from the Sollereckbahn gondola which is 7kms from Oberstdorf and is a very scenic area with wooded runs. It is particularly suited to families with young children and beginners. Generally the three areas are dominated by red & blue runs and are popular with intermediates and beginners. Expert skiers tend to migrate towards the Nebelhorn which has some challenging black runs. The area also has excellent langlauf and snowshoe areas and arguably some of the best marked ‘on mountain’ walking areas in the Alps.
Winterised Tips
- For discount fuel & bottled gas check out the V Markt supermarket at 16 Bundestrasse about 2kms out of town, just past MacDonalds
- Drop into Sport Markt on Weststrasse for discount prices on winter sports wear. (Cash & Debit Cards only)
- In high season ensure you are off the piste and in the bus queue before the rush as long waits are common
Pros
- Area well suited to caravanners, as having a car makes the most of the area.
- Good free parking at all out of town gondolas
- Excellent Langlauf, snowshoe, and winter walking areas
- Cosmopolitan town centre with good shopping and great selection of cafes and restaurants
Cons
- Campsite and ski areas and ski buses can be really busy during peak times. Check out German and Dutch school holidays before confirming dates
- Campsite does not accept credit cards, cash or debit card only
- Advance booking in peak season essential
- No wifi on site. Good 3G signal with 4G on some networks
- If pitched at furthest edge of site, dragging water etc to service point a pain. A children’s sledge to drag containers over the ice a useful idea.
